Bruce Cochran

Five Decades of Outdoor Humor.

Since the early ‘60s Bruce Cochran’s cartoons and illustrations have livened up the pages of America’s outdoor publications. His cartoons, illustrations, and stories are currently published in Wildfowl, Pheasants Forever Journal, North American Hunter, Wyoming Wildlife, Kansas Wildlife and Parks magazine, and elsewhere. Pick up a copy of Ducks Unlimited magazine and you’re likely to see a Cochran illustration in the Mixed Bag section.

The publication of Buck Fever by Willow Creek Press in 1990 launched his string of successful outdoor cartoon books. Quickly followed by Bass Fever, Trout Fever, and Duck Fever, “The Fever Series” as it became known, struck a familiar chord in the heart of every true outdoorsman.

In 2000 the series continued with Lab Fever, a collection of cartoons about the ever-popular Labrador retriever. Golden Fever, featuring cartoons about the loveable golden retriever, followed in 2003.

Breaking slightly from the cartoon format, Antlers Away was published later in 2003. One of Cochran’s most successful books, “Antlers” can best be described as a full color, hard bound, heavily illustrated humor book. While it does contain some cartoons, the other pages are filled with …. well… pick up a copy, enjoy it for yourself, and you’ll get the idea.

Sticking with the full color, hardbound format, “Antlers” was followed closely by Marsh Madness, a humorous look at the wacky world of the waterfowler. And coming up next, “Revenge of the Trout Zombies”, due to hit the shelves in the spring of ’08, takes a few good-natured jabs at the trout fisherman.

Cochran’s drawings illustrate the work of many popular outdoor humorists, including his own stories and articles. In 2000 and again in 2003 his stories were awarded first place in the Magazine Humor category of the OWAA Excellence in Craft contest. In 2008 his stories "Two White Ducks" from Wyoming Wildlife magazine and "My First Wild Game Dinner" from Wildfowl magazine took first and second place respectively.

A member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America, a supporter of Trout Unlimited and a Life Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited and a Life Member of the National Rifle Association, Cochran is a long time hunter and fishermen. Pick up any Cochran book or browse through a magazine featuring his cartoons, stories, or illustrations and you’ll experience the feeling of “being there” that has made his work so popular with sportsmen everywhere.
